Violence in Wellington
If you are at all concerned with personal safety in Wellington and opposed to violence then please consider contributing to this petition.
On Sunday morning the brother of a friend of mine was attacked in Wellington city while attempting to help in an altercation. He was severely beaten and kicked in the head and is fighting for his life in the hospital.
The attacker, [name removed], 21, a labourer from Newtown, looks likely to apply for bail according to the news reports.
The intent of the petition, started by the victims brother, Richard, is "to simply give a public opinion to the courts, and encourage this man's sentence to be the maximum to in turn keep him off the streets as long as possible."
Meanwhile please spare a thought for Andrew fighting for his life in hospital.

No question this is a problem. Petition signed. What is utterly unacceptable during daylight has become disturbingly accepted at night.
Our willingness to excuse anger and violence due to drinking must stop. Anyone with a record of violence while drunk should receive maximum penalties if they continue to reoffend despite that history.
That said, our mental health services have totally lost the plot, utterly failing people who know they need help.
Jail for this offender is a necessary measure, but it is not a long term solution, we need recognise that we have a societal responsibility for providing aid and shelter for those who have proven incapable of controlling themselves - we cannot continue to simply leave them wandering the streets as ticking timebombs.
You should get all of your fact's right before you start slandering somebodys name on the internet. It is tragic what has happened but you were not there to see what started this altercation you only know what the end result is.
I see you've been googling for the attackers name. Is that you?
You are correct that only one side of the story has been presented. That of the victim. If you're familiar with the other side you're most welcome to leave a comment about it.
I've removed the name of the offender from the post in any case to address your concerns and hope that things work out for the best for both sides of the situation.
