New Wheels

One problem with living in Auckland is that it's hard to get around without a car. The bus service is pretty good for getting to and from town but if you want to go to other areas of Auckland then it becomes more difficult. Although bus and trains do go to other areas they take a long time and are fairly expensive.

I've missed being able to do my martial arts training. To get to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club in Auckland it's quite a mission of multiple bus trips and long walks from bus stops. It's not really practical to be able to get there from the time I leave work, in time for the training.

1989 Volkswagen Cabriolet
So I went shopping for a car. I like quirky, non-mainstream, things, whether it's martial arts, programming languages or cars. I eventually bought a 1989 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet. A picture of it is on the right. The cabriolet is in good condition and drives well. The top is a bit faded but doesn't leak. It also had a good stereo system and an alarm. It got me to training a couple of days ago so that's a good sign.

Of course now I have no excuse not to go to training. It's been surprisingly tough after having almost a year off training to motivate myself to get back into it knowing the pain of my body not being used to grappling, and my brain being too slow to remember what it should be doing, and when it should be doing it. I really enjoyed my first day training at Ground Control in Auckland and am looking forward to next time.

When I was in Seattle in 1998 an Irish guy I was working with had one of those. Four of us took a day trip to Vancouver in it.
